She earned a BA at the University of Pennsylvania and a PhD at Princeton University, both in sociology. Goffman attended The Baldwin School in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania. In 2019, the University of Wisconsin denied her tenure. Goffman wrote On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City, a book about over-policing, poverty, and incarceration experienced by young black men and their families in Philadelphia, which was a best-selling book for which she received widespread praise before it later came under scrutiny and criticism. She was assistant professor of sociology at the University of Wisconsin–Madison and visiting assistant professor of sociology at Pomona College.
